Campaign Success:
Nadine Dorries' amendment to remove independence from abortion councelling was heavily defeated on 7 September in a free vote with a 250 majority. However vigilence is necessary as the threat remains. Health Minister Ann Milton warned that changes would be made once the bill is passed as the government agreed with "the spirit" of the amendment and would be bringing forward its own proposals. Darinka Aleksic, Abortion Rights co-ordinator, said that she was delighted with the outcome but would be watching the consultation very closely. The BMA has warned of "clear evidence of a risk to women" if changes are made to the current counselling system. Well done everyone.

The Pensions Bill is currently in the House of Lords.
The NAW urges all women to contact their MP and demand opposition to the Bill when it reaches the House of Commons. These are the full effects of the ConDem government’s proposed changes to Women’s state pension ages:
- Half a million women will have their state pension delayed by more than 12 months.
- For 300,000 women the delay is between 18 and 24 months
- For 33,000 women the delay is two years, costing them over £10,000.

Coalition Cuts are a direct attack on Women says NAW.
When the NAW’s AGM was held in April 2010, we determined to oppose the public service cuts that all 3 largest parties were proposing to impose “to balance the books”. Our opposition was based on the likelihood that cuts would have a greater impact on women than men, both women working in the public sector and using public services to meet their families’ needs.
Our fears were well founded.
